The PPSh-41's success is due to its simplicity, high rate of firing, high fire density, and accuracy. Georgi Shpagin succeeded in constructing the simplest and most affordable system conceivable. The submachine gun required only 87 pieces, the majority of which were stamped. The assembly took only 5.6 machine hours. By comparison, DP Degtyaryov required 95 pieces and 25.3 machine hours to manufacture. In addition, it was not necessary to create a separate cartridge for PPSh.

The various modifications were used by 21 armies around the world, and the exact number of PPSh produced is not known.
